By the winter of 1944, the Gothic Line in the Northern Apennines stood as the final, formidable German stronghold in Italy. The terrain was a natural fortress of jagged, vertical peaks and deep, snow-choked valleys that made it nearly impossible for traditional forces to penetrate inland, stalling the Allied advance for months.
To break this stalemate, the Allies turned to specialised units. The 10th Mountain Division, America’s elite alpine troops, was called in to tackle the peaks, while the 442nd RCT and the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB) brought relentless determination to the flanks, proving that the "unbreakable" German defences were anything but.
While previous attempts to breach the line had been repelled, the silent night-climb of the "unscalable" Riva Ridge changed the course of the war. Relying on their specialised mountain training and sheer grit, these units bypassed the entrenched valley floors and took the fight to the skies, earning them a reputation as the most lethal mountain force in the world.
Come follow in the footsteps of the 10th Mountain, the 442nd RCT, and the Smoking Cobras with SOE Expeditions as we visit their historical sites and battlefields across Northern Italy.
Day 1: Arrival & Orientation
Land at Pisa International Airport and make the short transfer to Pietrasanta. Known as the "Little Athens" of Italy, this artsy town at the foot of the Apuan Alps is our base for the first few days. After check-in, we’ll have a mission briefing to lay out the tactical framework for the journey ahead.
Day 2: The Serchio Valley
We push inland to Borgo a Mozzano to explore one of the best-preserved sectors of the Gothic Line. We’ll investigate rock-cut bunkers and the legendary Devil’s Bridge—the only bridge in the region the Germans didn't blow up.
Day 3: Mount Folgorito (442nd RCT)
Retrace the "Goat Trail"—the vertical ridge the Germans deemed impassable. We’ll follow the footsteps of the Nisei soldiers who scaled this 911m peak in total silence to crack the western anchor of the German line in just 32 minutes.
Day 4: Marble Mountains & Partisans
Move into the surreal landscape of the Carrara marble quarries. We’ll explore the tunnel systems used by both German defenders and the Italian Partisans, visiting the Massa Memorial and the high-altitude refuges where the resistance coordinated with Allied forces.
Day 5: Riva Ridge (10th Mountain)
One of the most daring operations of the war. We’ll study the technical 1,500-foot vertical ascent of Riva Ridge. For the adventurous, an optional guided technical climb is available to truly understand the "unscalable" feat achieved by the 10th Mountain Division.
Day 6: Mount Belvedere
With Riva Ridge secured, the Allies struck the "hinge" of the German defense. We’ll explore the summit positions, foxholes, and stone-walled German sangars that were the site of brutal fighting as the 10th Mountain Division finally shattered the stalemate.
Day 7: Monte Castello & Montese (FEB)
Today focuses on the Brazilian Expeditionary Force. We’ll walk the tactical routes up Monte Castello and move into Montese for a lesson in urban warfare, visiting the "Last House" markers and the historical museum dedicated to the FEB's tenacity.
Day 8: Gaggio Montano & Pistoia
We visit the Brazilian sector command in Gaggio Montano before heading to the Votive Monument in Pistoia. This is a day for quiet reflection, honoring the 462 Brazilian soldiers who gave their lives for the liberation of Italy.
Day 9: Bologna – Liberation
The Victory Walk. We enter Bologna through the historic porticos, tracing the markers of the Polish, American, and Brazilian units that liberated the city. We’ll wrap up the mission with a traditional celebratory dinner in the heart of the city.
Day 10: Departure
A final team debrief over breakfast before the transfer to Bologna Airport for your journey home.
